1. THE NIGHTMARE
A horrible screaming could be heard throughout the entire mountain. Freegirl was having her nightmare again.
A snarling whip of cruel thunder bore her wrath from the sky, deafening the world and bringing madness to the ears.
Then the violent king thrust her anger into the faces of the ocean waves—and the ground became the sea—crashing and boiling the lives dwelled upon the coast.
Volcanoes opened their mouths and regurgitated the blazing lava that burned deep within the bowels of the planet. Out on the coastlines, as well as in the valleys, mountains and hills crumbled and sank into bottomless trenches.
Freegirl thrashed in her bed at the sight of the bottomless abyss, dark and foreboding—spreading and gaping into wicked grins of deep, muddy, waters, gurgling.
The lightning in the universe cracked again, blasting the helpless ground beneath its electrical lashings.
Rivers splashed out of control with the endless tremors that moaned and rocked the surrounding lands. Where surging water did not plunge, fires burned the trees and the homes, and the innocent trapped in their paths.
Islands were unsafe havens, roaring in volcanic anger—only to be purged by the even more powerful sea.
Freegirl screamed again, as her paradise was in total chaos. Death was the child chaos bore. When Death began killing the people, the young girl screamed herself awakened.
This is how it always was, a shocking arousal as soon as she saw her own kind hurt.
The Nightmare.
As long as Freegirl could remember, she had always sensed doom. But only lately, in her teens, did her childhood feelings turn into a raging nightmare. Sometimes she would have the horrible dream several times a week.
When Freegirl told her mother, Balancea, about the awful vision, her mother soothed and listened, but could not imagine such a dream. The planet of Photopia was a tropical paradise, and the people living within its gardens were peaceful. Love and Respect were at the center of this world.
Of course, the planet had periods of unleashing catastrophes— like quakes and tornadoes—but it was unlikely Mother Nature would destroy her own children. She was the mother, after all, and the humans were watchful and alert upon this planet. It was uncommon for a violent force of the mother to trap a Child unprepared.
The nightmare of the unusual young girl was spoken of rarely, her clan believing it was a powerful memory carried from another lifetime, a remembrance so disturbing the experience still lived in her soul. For the Child to quiet its penetrating shadow, several more lifetimes could be needed.
One day when she was older and stronger, one of the elders would guide her on a mind trip to probe the source of her mysterious nightmare. Until then, Freegirl would spend her life in creativity, physical activity, and Contemplation.
Or at least that’s what the elders thought.
